As the new season approaches, it's easy to be tempted by fresh arrivals in the shops. Rich autumn colours, cosy knitwear and new season collections can make us feel as though we need an entirely new wardrobe.
But before you head to the checkout, pause for a moment.
The most stylish wardrobes aren't built by buying more, they're built by buying better.
As a personal stylist, I always encourage my clients to shop with intention. Asking yourself a few simple questions before making a purchase can save you money, reduce impulse buys and help you build a wardrobe you'll genuinely enjoy wearing.
Here are the five questions I recommend asking yourself before buying anything this autumn:

1. Does it work with what I already own?
One of the biggest reasons wardrobes become cluttered is because we buy individual pieces rather than complete outfits.
Before you buy something new, think about what you already have.
Can you immediately picture at least three outfits you could create with it?
If not, it may not be the right purchase.

2. Does it suit my colouring, shape and personal style?
Just because something is fashionable doesn't mean it's right for you.
The best purchases are the ones that enhance your natural colouring, flatter your proportions and feel authentic to your style.
When all three come together, you'll wear that piece again and again.

3. Does it fit my lifestyle?
Ask yourself an honest question.
Will I actually wear this?
Or am I buying it for the life I wish I had?
Your wardrobe should support your everyday life, not just the occasional event.

4. Can I see myself wearing this next year?
Impulse purchases often lose their appeal after a few wears. Instead, look for pieces you'll still be excited to wear next autumn.
Timeless isn't necessarily boring, it simply means choosing items with lasting appeal.

5. Am I buying this because I need it⦠or because I'm chasing a feeling?
This is perhaps the most important question.
Sometimes we shop because we're bored, stressed or hoping a new purchase will make getting dressed easier. But if your wardrobe lacks direction, one more jumper or pair of boots probably won't solve the problem.
Often, what you really need is clarity, not more clothes.

This autumn, If you can confidently answer "yes" to all five questions, it could be a great addition to your wardrobe. If notā¦walk away. If you're still thinking about it in a few days, it may well be worth going back for.
Shopping intentionally doesn't mean never treating yourself. It means making every purchase count. When each new addition works beautifully with the clothes you already own, getting dressed becomes simpler, your wardrobe becomes more cohesive and you'll find yourself wearing far more of what you buy.
If shopping has started to feel overwhelming or you find yourself making purchases that never quite work, it might be time to take a step back. I'll help you understand what truly suits you, identify the gaps in your wardrobe and build a collection of clothes that works together beautifully, making every future purchase a more confident one.
